Measured demand at public EV charging sites, inside Claude.

Tern gives Claude read-only access to SurplusMap's observed utilisation data for public fast and high-power charging stations. Ask how hard a site works, how it compares with its neighbours, and when it peaks, and get answers built on measured sessions rather than modelled guesses.

Who can use it

Tern is for teams with a SurplusMap account: charge point operators, fuel and convenience retailers, site developers, investors and grid planners who need evidence about real charging demand.

You sign in with your SurplusMap account. Each team's plan sets which countries it can read and how many calls it can make each month.

  3. 03

Sign in with your SurplusMap account and approve access.

  4. 04

Back in Claude, turn Tern on for the chat and ask a question about a charging site.

Adding it by URL

If the connector does not show up in the directory for you yet, add it as a custom connector with this server URL:

https://tern-mcp-537572042041.europe-west4.run.app/mcp

Automated or server-to-server use can authenticate with a Tern API key instead of OAuth, sent as Authorization: Bearer <key> or X-API-Key.

Coverage and limits

Data comes from public charge point status feeds that SurplusMap collects and processes into sessions, minutes and utilisation per charge point. Norway is available by default. Other markets depend on your team's plan.

What you can ask

Ask in plain language about the public fast and high-power charging sites your plan covers. Tern tells you how busy a site is, how that is changing over time, when it is at its busiest, and how it stands against the sites around it and against the rest of your portfolio. Tern only reads data and never changes anything in your account or anywhere else.

How answers work

Tern returns finished answers, not raw data. Each answer has a status: computed when there was enough data to answer, or insufficient when there was not. Claude should report an insufficient result as "not enough data", never as zero.

The detailed observations behind a result are pulled into temporary storage for that call only and deleted before the answer is returned. Nothing from the calculation stays on the server for later reading.

Utilisation is measured from charge point status, so it shows observed sessions and occupied minutes. It does not show prices, revenue or energy billed.

Example prompts

Find the fast chargers within 3 km of Rygge on the E6 and compare their demand per charge point for the last 90 days.

When does the IONITY site at Rygge hit its busiest hour, and do the stations around it peak at the same time?

Rank these eight sites on sessions per charge point per day for Q3 and tell me how far the bottom one is from the median.

Is demand at this site growing month over month, and which days this summer were unusually busy?

Troubleshooting

unauthorized
You are not signed in, or your session expired. Disconnect and connect Tern again in Claude's connector settings.
country_access_denied
Your team's plan does not include that country. Contact support to add it.
invalid_request
A required input is missing, or the period is longer than 92 days. Ask Claude to narrow the request.
insufficient
Not enough observations in the period to answer. Try a longer period.
